Anyone trying to sell their house could benefit from home improvements in the right area, according to Halifax.
The research shows that 11 per cent of buyers find a build up of limescale or mould to be the most undesirable feature of a property. Mortgage holders could also reap benefits from refitting their kitchen, redecorating their sitting room, or even just keeping their garden neat and tidy. However the most value for money improvement for potential sellers is loft conversions, with Halifax rating this as ten out of ten for return on the investment. Jon Sykes, head of mainstream mortgage products at Halifax, advises potential sellers to be cautious when carrying out any changes, as buyers can often be selective about what constitutes an improvement. "With any home improvement project planning is key. Changes that are purely down to personal preference and a desire to have the latest 'must have' features can strip value from your property when it comes to selling it. "Essential repairs and replacements are always worthwhile, as avoiding them can lead to bigger problems in the future." Halifax is a part of the Halifax Bank of Scotland group, providing banking, credit cards, insurance, personal loans, mortgages, savings and investments to its customers.
